Controller stops rotating parts or the active controller changes
Valve currently passes ReStory for the Steam Deck built-in controls, while its compatibility report warns that an external controller is not supported as the primary player. Disconnect Bluetooth and USB pads, return to the built-in controls, set ReStory to its default Steam Input layout, reopen the device and test one action. Reconnect only one controller after the built-in controls work. If rotation still fails, reload a protected save and report the build, controller, connection and device.
| Check | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Built-in controls | Steam Deck is the active primary controller |
| External controller | Bluetooth and USB pads are disconnected for the first test |
| Steam Input | Default ReStory layout is active |
| Device state | Reopen the device before retrying rotation |
| Report | Build, controller, connection and device are recorded |
Is ReStory Steam Deck Verified?
Yes. Valve’s August 24 compatibility test and live report currently return category 3 (Verified) for ReStory. It passes built-in controller access, matching Deck glyphs, readable interface text and default-performance checks. The same record displays one warning: an external controller is not supported as the primary player. This is the current result; the Playable result recorded near launch is historical.
| Valve check | Current result |
|---|---|
| Current rating | Verified |
| Built-in controls | All functionality accessible |
| Button prompts | Controller glyphs match Steam Deck |
| Text | Legible on the handheld display |
| Default configuration | Passes the performance check |
| External controller | Not supported as the primary player |
Start with the default settings
Verified means Valve’s default-configuration checks pass; it does not promise one frame rate, temperature or battery-life result in every scene. Start with the default graphics and the built-in controller. Change one setting at a time only when you can repeat the same symptom.
External controller is not accepted as the primary player
The current compatibility warning concerns external controllers, not the Deck’s built-in controls. Disconnect Bluetooth and USB controllers, close the game, launch it with the Deck controls and confirm the default Steam Input layout. After the built-in controls respond, reconnect one pad and test it. Do not treat controller switching as a proven fix for a broken repair state.
Slowdown, heat or a repair that gets stuck
Verified is a compatibility result, not a temperature benchmark. Valve does not publish a universal FPS, battery-life or temperature target here. Record the scene, graphics settings, SteamOS version and game build before changing settings. For soldering or story progression, use the matching guide and current patch notes instead of assuming a Deck-specific fault.
Protect saves before troubleshooting
Keep a separate save before testing a workaround. Do not reset the campaign or delete Proton files as a first step. If the same fault survives a reload, record the exact device, task, controller state and current build.
Steam Deck FAQ
Is ReStory Verified? Yes; Valve’s current report returns Verified. Does that guarantee 60 FPS everywhere? No; the report gives no universal frame-rate target. Why does an external pad fail as player one? The current Valve record explicitly warns that external controllers are not supported as the primary player. Use the built-in controls first, the default Steam Input layout and one external controller at a time.
